In the town of El Tejar, the heart of Guatemala beats to the sound of the marimba, and for one student in the music program, this instrument has become the rhythm of his life. Carlitos (little Carl), as we still call him in the Program, began his musical journey at the age of eight. He first explored the world of music through keyboard and flute lessons, but it wasn’t long before the marimba captured his heart.

When he began playing, Carlitos was so small that he had to stand on boxes just to reach the marimba keys. But what he lacked in height, he made up for in determination and passion. With each passing year, his connection to the marimba deepened, and today, he describes playing it as an experience where “time doesn’t exist.”
Through the Program, Carlitos has not only learned music but also found a community of friends who share his love for melodies and rhythms. His dedication led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree with a major in music, where he and his peers recorded an album and even won an award. His talents have also opened professional doors—he is now a proud member of the marimba group Maya Occidental, earning a salary every time they perform.

Despite his busy schedule, Carlitos remains deeply connected to the music program. Every Saturday, he faithfully returns to be part of the artistic group, ensuring that his roots in the Program remain strong. He is also thrilled to be a member of the Latin band, an ensemble made up of alumni and current students who continue to share their love for music together.
Carlitos’ dream is to continue growing as a solo marimbist, refining his skills and sharing his passion with the world. As he puts it, “Music makes me happy, and I will continue making music as long as time allows.”
His journey is a testament to the transformative power of music and the incredible opportunities that dedication and passion can bring. We at Senderos Guatemala are beyond proud to be part of his story and can’t wait to see where his music takes him next.
